Here at Dale house barn and B&B we want our guests to have a really comfortable and enjoyable stay and make the most of the fantastic countryside all around us with minimum impact to the environment

Andrew and Dominique bought Dale house and the barn in January 2014 with a view to simplifying their own lives and living closer to nature in a sustainable manner.

We have taken and continue to take steps to achieve this goal.

These include

Getting rid of the old oil heating system and installing a commercial bio mass boiler. It runs on sustainable fuel and provides hot water and heating for both the barn and the main house.  We found some old roll top radiators on eBay, which we reconditioned and installed to add to the comfort in the barn.

All our wood for the stoves in the barn and the main house is sourced locally.  Trees that have blown over in nearby farms or the Clapham estate are collected and logged by Andrew and then dried in one of our sheds ready for use the following year.

We have installed solar panels on our roof to provide electricity and reduce our usage from the grid. We have now replaced all our light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs and encourage everyone including ourselves to “switch off”.

The whole of the ground floor of the house was excavated. It was then insulated and we managed to save some of the original flagstones that had been covered up by modern tiles and rubble for many years. The broken and unusable flags will be re shaped and utilized in the garden next year to make paths and patio areas.

Many of the "blown" double glazed windowpanes have been replaced to ensure we are as energy efficient as possible in a 400-year-old building.

We have started re pointing areas of the barn and the main house. With Dominiques’ 22 years as a pastry chef, she has discovered a natural ability for this as It’s much like icing a cake! It’s a labour of love that will take years to complete, but will ensure the building is still standing in another 400 years!

We don’t get a rubbish collection at Dale house and whilst this is a minor inconvenience it also allows us to be very careful with our waste management and we ensure that as much as possible is recycled. There are separate recycling bins in both the barn and the B&B rooms.

We use micro fiber cloths and environmentally friendly cleaning products throughout the property.

We have 6 different types of hens, which have free range of the gardens and meadows. They provide eggs for breakfast in the B&B and are also available for our guests in the barn to purchase.

2015 saw the arrival of our first colony of bees, which will hopefully provide us with honey in the coming years.

We source our food locally and use as many local suppliers as possible including offering wild boar sausages from the wild boar farm in the Forest of Bowland. We offer a home made sour dough bread for breakfast and also home made preserves for the B&B guests in the house.

Gisburn forest has recently been awarded dark skies status and we are perfectly situated for an evening of star gazing. We keep an astronomical calendar on out web site to inform our guests of worthwhile celestial happenings.

Dominique has recently qualified and a first responder for the North West ambulance service. She is now able and on call to provide emergency first aid locally, in advance of an ambulance crew getting out to this remote area.

We would like our guests to make the most of the outdoors whilst they are here and can provide maps and downloaded walking or cycling routes. Our friends at Cycle adventure will bring hire bikes to our door should you need them and we are really pleased to be able to offer outdoor activities with the services of Alternative adventure.
